Sedona Heritage Museum

The Sedona Heritage Museum houses its collection in the Jordan Historical Park at a735 Jordan Road in Sedona. The museum operates through the auspices of the Sedona Historical Society, a non-profit group.

The society is run by volunteers who have as their goals to: "Collect, restore, preserve and display artifacts, histories, maps, structures and other memorabilia relating to the history of the Sedona/Oak Creek area...so that they might be presented to the public." Acknowledging that history is not stagnant, the group is determined to grow and change.

Those who wish to have more information on the Sedona Historical Society can call 520-282-7083.

History of the Sedona Historical Society and Museum
When Sedona area residents began to plan a historical society in 1975, progress was slow. However, by 1982, the group drew up the Articles of Incorporation for the Sedona Historical Society. The first Trustees were Richard L. Caragol, James K. Courtright, James D. Ellson, Cynthia V. Nasta and Douglas E. Perkins. Some early projects included taping and preserving oral histories of early pioneers and long-time residents. Early on, the group planned to build a structure to house artifacts and archival materials.

Although T. C. Schnebly named the community Sedona, for his wife, in 1902, Sedona was not incorporated until the end of the 1980s. In 1990, the new municipality purchased 3.7 acres containing the remnants of the Walter and Ruth Jordan orchards and home. They dedicated the site as a historic park, and today the home and outbuildings house the artifact and archival collections of the Sedona Historical Society.

Large collections include: the Laura McBride Collection, the Ruth Wold Jordan Collection, the Edith Denton Collection, the Katherine Bardley Collection, the Della Purtymun Greenwell Collection, the Thompson Family Collection, the Schnebly Collection, and the Smith Collection.

History of the Jordan farm
The climate and water resources of the Verde Valley were ideal for early farmers and ranchers. Two early settlers, Will and Annie Jordan, farmed near Clarkdale until smoke and emissions from the smelter forced their move to Bridgeport. They bought property in Sedona in 1913 but never lived there. George, their seventh child, acquired 200 acres of the Sedona property and raised apples and peaches on the land now owned by the Sedona Arts Center.

Walter was another son. Born in 1897, he began growing fruit trees on family property in 1927, and married in 1930. He and his wife Ruth moved to the property and built a cabin consisting of one room and a sleeping porch. Their three children were born in 1933, 1934 and 1936.

Over the years, they added onto the tiny cabin, building in both convenience and charm. The house serves as the ideal location of a museum, and the setting is breath taking. In addition to using the house, the Historical Society has exhibits and storage space in the red stone barn located behind it. That building once housed an apple-packing facility. The apple sorter is still there and has been restored so that it is operational.

ARTIFACTS
Structures: note that the structures belong to the City of Sedona, which leases them to the Sedona Historical Society
Jordan House: The house is built of wood, with knotty pine paneling on the inside. It has many unique features. In the kitchen there is a built in cooling closet with three doors and several shelves made of slats. The air was conducted through the closet from the basement to the ceiling, and the natural airflow kept food cool. The knotty pine kitchen cabinets were custom designed to fit Mrs. Jordan's cooking equipment. There is a built in telephone stand in the kitchen, and Dutch doors open to the outdoors. As the house grew, the owners added two bathrooms. Many of the original plumbing fixtures are still there, and the built-in cabinets contain samples of toiletries similar to those the family may have used. The light fixtures and electrical plug ins also appear to be original.

Shed: red stone apple packing and storage facility. There is a large walk-in cooler now used to store artifacts and some archival materials.
Equipment shed: wooden, typical of an earlier era.
