The Skull Valley Historical Society is located in buildings associated with railroad service in the area. It has built up a significant collection of artifacts over the years, and the public can view them at the Skull Valley Museum throughout the summer and early fall on Sundays between 2:00 and 4:00 PM. The Depot Museum is run entirely by dedicated volunteers, who greatly appreciate the donations of visitors.
As one might expect with a facility called the Depot Museum, many of the artifacts there are railroad related.
History of Skull Valley
When the Walker party was on its way to Prescott in 1864, several of the members broke ranks. One was Alfred Shupp, who is now termed the first settler, along with his wife and son, in Skull Valley. The lush grasses of the valley and the various minerals found in the hills surrounding it attracted others like the Shupp family. By 1869 the settlement had grown enough to have a Post Office.
There are various stories about how Skull Valley got its rather dreary name. Some say that early settlers found mounds of bleached skulls, the aftermath of a battle between two groups of Indians. But W. H. Wagner, identified as "A Contributor to The Times," wrote in 1895 that the name Skull Valley came into use after a clash between Apaches and an Army detachment from the Whipple Barracks. Using colorful language typical of his era, Wagner maintains that in the mid 1870s, the "straight shooting" soldiers, who had been disguised as freight in wagons that comprised a small train, killed all 200 of the "marauders" who attacked the wagon train and left their corpses where their bones would bleach in the "burning sands." The bones supposedly served as a "bad omen" to "neighboring tribes." "[A]nd from that day to this," Wagner wrote, "there have [sic] been no Indian pillaging or visiting in this valley." The account sounds both heartless and exaggerated, but no matter whose skulls they were, the fabled skulls that gave the valley such a mournful name attest to the fact that early life in the area was not always peaceful.
The story of Anglo/Indian relations in the Skull Valley area is similar to that generated every time White settlements pushed westward. Native Americans, who had lived on the land for centuries, resented the intrusion. However, the prevailing notion of whites was that progress was inevitable, and progress entailed settling the West. In order to protect the early settlers in Skull Valley and guard the freighters who carried supplies to Prescott and Fort Whipple, the US government established Fort McPherson in the area in 1873. By 1875 the situation was calm enough so that the Fort McPherson closed and military operations moved to Date Creek.
Since peace was tenuous and conditions were harsh, the first male settlers often left their families behind, but by the late 1870s, women and children arrived in larger numbers. Although official records do not indicate this, area settlers recall that a school was established in 1878. The school had been regularized by the early 1900s, when it offered education to children in all of the grades. Despite extensive consolidations in Yavapai County, Skull Valley still has a school. The structure serving that purpose was built in 1925. Students above the 8th grade are bussed to Prescott to attend high school.
Skull Valley was never a boomtown but its merchants and a hotel built in 1900 served the needs of travelers along with Skull Valley residents-miners and ranchers, who raised not only cattle and sheep, but goats as well. Skull Valley was also a stage stop and later it served as a railroad center. It is railroading that has left a strong mark on the settlement.
The first church services in Skull Valley allegedly were held in 1894, the same year the first train came through the area. The line that passed through Skull Valley was an extension of the Peavine Railroad that ran from Ash Fork to Prescott, one of the most important cities in Arizona. By 1895, the new line, named the Prescott & Phoenix Railroad, extended to Phoenix. The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe quickly purchased the line, and the Santa Fe still passes through the valley.
Although modern trains barrel past Skull Valley, earlier traffic on the line was heavy enough to warrant a depot in the settlement. The first depot was built in 1898, and agents served the area for the next 71 years. Passenger service ceased on April 20, 1962, and the agents left in 1969.
Because of its sparse population, electricity came late to the region. Some of the older women remember ironing their clothes using gasoline irons, like the one on display in the Depot Museum. Many local residents, including Violet Irving, owner of the general store in the 1930s and 1940s, fought hard to bring electricity to the area. Kirkland got electricity in the 1930s, but it was not until 1948 that APS extended electric service to Skull Valley.
Skull Valley Historical Society
Drastic changes often remind humans that they must preserve their history. This is precisely what happened in Skull Valley when the railroad abandoned the depot. Violet Irving, the Munderlohs, Louise Phippen, Bob and Mary Kukal, Hulda Christopherson, Edna Ballew/Patton, and others were among the residents who initiated the idea of gathering area artifacts and displaying them in the old Santa Fe depot.
The group began with an effort to convince the Santa Fe to donate the depot to the newly formed Historical Society (1969), and in 1970 the depot was moved from its original location to land the Historical Society leased from the school district. Society members began collecting artifacts to place in their new museum.
As the collection outgrew its first quarters, members of the Historical Society searched for a new building. They began negotiations for the area Section House in 1989, and on August 17, 1990, they had it moved to its present location adjacent to the Depot.
Extremely dedicated volunteers run the museum, but their numbers are not great. They actively recruit new area residents to continue the work they have begun.

Railroad Depot, wood, built in 1898 and moved from Cherry Creek in 1926. The Santa Fe donated the structure to the Skull Valley Historical Society in 1969, and it was moved to land leased from the local school district in 1970.
Section House: constructed of a pattern common to most section houses built by the Santa Fe Railroad. There is a front porch, living room, kitchen, bathroom and three smaller rooms. When the house was moved from its working location at Ramsgate to its present location next to the Santa Fe Depot in August 1990, it had to be cut in half.
