Smoki Museum of American Indian Art and Culture
Located at 147 North Arizona in Prescott, the Smoki Museum's mission is to acquire, conserve, study, and interpret art, artifacts and documents pertaining to Native American prehistory and history, with a particular emphasis on the Prescott region. The museum promotes the understanding of the region through research, exhibits, and education programs and maintains a library relevant to its collections.
People wishing to obtain more information about the museum or to arrange formal research should call 520-445-1230.
History of the Smoki Museum
The Smoki People formed their organization in the early part of the 20th century. This group of Anglo men and women were interested in preserving Native American arts and culture, and they did so by recreating costumes, structures, celebrations, and activities modeled after those of actual Native American groups. The Smoki were active in Yavapai County through the 1980s; they held their last dance in 1990.
Information on the history of the Smoki Museum is spotty, and much of it is hearsay. The Smoki were a private group, and since they formed and operated the Smoki Museum until the 1990s, records of the museum up to that point are not currently available to the public. However, the museum, which now exists as an independent entity, has a well-qualified volunteer research associate. Attempting to act as an unbiased investigator, he plans to gather, interpret, and record information on the history of the Smoki People and the museum proper.
The Smoki People, who built, maintained, and ran the museum until recently, formally organized as a society in 1921. There are different stories about why the organization was formed. The people involved were, of course, interested in the Native American cultures found in and around Central and Northern Arizona, but an impetus for formal organization and public activities may have been generated by the Prescott Rodeo Association, which was having trouble arousing public interest in its activities.
Shortly after they formed an organization, the Smoki People built the first Hopi-style structure associated with the museum. This is the small pueblo located next to the present museum. Early on, the pueblo housed the society's small but growing collection of artifacts; soon, however, it became clear that the collection was outgrowing its facilities. Archeologists from the University of Arizona excavated many Sinagua sites in Yavapai County in the 1930s, and the Smoki people had successfully acquired many of the artifacts uncovered in their endeavors.
Grace Sparks and the Yavapai County Chamber of Commerce encouraged and helped to facilitate these excavations, and they also facilitated the building of the present, larger Smoki museum. Ms. Sparks was connected both with the Yavapai County Chamber of Commerce and with the Emergency Relief Administration of Arizona. The latter was a public relief effort mandated by the dismal employment situation that existed in the U.S. during the 1930s. It was through Sparks that the Smoki People were able to access Civil Works Administration labor funds to build their museum. The museum was dedicated in 1935.
The museum is a sixty-foot square building constructed of native stone and designed to resemble a Hopi structure. The largest portion of the building houses the museum. Originally the rear area served as the residence and workshop of the curator; however, that space is now used for a library and administrative activities.
Kate Cory was a prominent artist from the Northeast who lived in Hopi villages between 1905 and 1912. After that, she moved to Prescott and eventually became interested in the activities of the Smoki People. An accomplished painter and photographer, it is she who was primarily responsible for many design features of the interior of the building.
The central part of the museum resembles a covered kiva, but instead of providing a sacred space, it housed the heating system for the building. On one side of the large, unpartitioned room there is a huge, double-mouthed fireplace that was inspired by Zuni design. Display cases line the walls and form aisles in the center of the building.
The building is, itself, a historic treasure. The builders paid a great deal of attention to detail, with Ms. Cory incorporating Native American designs into lighting fixtures and other decorative elements in the structure. She may also have helped design the artful, handmade cabinetry and furniture found in the museum proper and in the curator's quarters.
