Sharlot Hall Museum

Located on Gurley and McCormick Streets in the heart of downtown Prescott, the Sharlot Hall Museum's mission is to collect, preserve, and make available significant historic artifacts to the staff and public for research purposes. The collection's concentration is on the pre-history, history and environmental history of the central mountain region of Arizona, Yavapai County and Prescott.

The museum has an extensive collection of artifacts that illuminate the early Territorial Period. This collection is comprised of clothing, furniture and artifacts connected with the military. The museum also has extensive collections that deal with mining, railroads, and ranching.

Large personal collections were donated by or belonged to: Sharlot Hall, the family of General George Crook, the Reggin/Sunderhaus family, Dr. Florence Yount, Shen's Photographic Studio, Backe Photography, the Payne family, and the Morris Goldwater family.

The hours vary according to season. From April 1 to October 31, it is open from 10 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Saturday and between 1:00 PM and 5 PM on Sunday. Between November 1 and March 31, the museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10 AM until 4 PM and on Sunday between 1:00 PM and 5 PM. It is closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

History of Sharlot Hall Museum
The Sharlot Hall Museum is not simply named after a woman who was a Yavapai County pioneer. That hearty writer/historian actually founded the museum. Very early on, Sharlot Hall realized that the history of the Territory would be lost when the earliest settlers died. To prevent this, she began to visit them or correspond with them so she could record their stories in writing. She also observed that the national craze for collecting Indian relics was likely to destroy the evidence of these civilizations in Arizona. Therefore, she began to obtain artifacts simply to preserve them. Eventually both of these activities bore full fruit. In 1927, the situation presented itself for Miss Hall to found a permanent, public repository for significant archives and artifacts. She developed this site, relying chiefly on her knowledge of the development of Arizona, her personal collection of historic artifacts, and a great deal of her own money. She bequeathed to the museum not only physical objects, but also her sprit of adventure, respect for history and sense of service to the community.

Miss Hall was born in Kansas in 1870, but the family moved several times before settling in Arizona in 1882. Her father went from farming to mining and then on to ranching. Through all of this, Sharlot was an important element in the family's economic survival, and those family and daily obligations prevented her from obtaining the kind of education she would have loved. As fate would have it, her formal education was scant and spotty. Despite this lack-and characteristic of her indomitable will-Sharlot Hall published her first short story in 1891, became a magazine editor in 1905, and in 1909 was appointed Territorial Historian.

Since she was a child, Miss Hall had been fascinated with both literature and history. She first visited the retired judge who lived in the old governor's mansion in Prescott in 1886. A little over thirty years later the City of Prescott would grant a life-long lease on this dilapidated building to Miss Hall. This was the beginning of the Sharlot Hall Museum.

That was in 1927. After the transaction was complete, Miss Hall sold the ranch she had inherited from her parents and invested part of the proceeds and most of her energy in cleaning up the Governor's Mansion. Gradually she moved her personal collection of artifacts into the historic space and asked local people to donate items that could tell the story of life in Yavapai County. Then, the visitors began to arrive. Initially most of them were local school children, but the number of visitors gradually increased and included even the governor of Arizona, George W. P. Hunt.

But artifacts and visitors cannot keep a museum going indefinitely. Funds are needed. One early supporter of the Sharlot Hall Museum was the state legislature, and the relationship it formed with the legislature was unique. When other museums receive money through the state legislature, it usually is channeled through the State Historical Society. However, Sharlot Hall Museum's money comes through the Prescott Historical Society, which is a state agency.

Sharlot Hall Museum's state funding (through the Prescott Historical Society) has been steady, commencing even before the museum's Articles of Incorporation were filed in May of 1929. The funds were absolutely necessary. While Miss Hall's dedication surely would have sufficed to establish an important personal collection of artifacts, this dedication alone could not have purchased buildings or paid for renovations. Nor could this dedication have paid for the help that was eventually necessary to preserve, catalog and make the archival materials and artifacts available to the public.

Not only the state legislature, but also the federal government played a key financial role in fostering the museum's growth. During the Depression, Miss Hall obtained assistance through the various agencies established to provide work for unemployed laborers. Hall's first help came from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, and eventually another local woman of fortitude, Grace Sparks, provided help through the federal relief agencies she administered in Yavapai County. Under these programs, new buildings were constructed; better conditions were provided for securing and conserving artifacts; the grounds were cleared and maintained; and the system of cataloging was improved.

In the 1930s, under Miss Hall's watchful eye, the museum grew by leaps and bounds. Although she tended to refer to the museum as The Old Governor's Mansion Museum, it was during this decade that the museum began to use the founder's name in its title.

Honored though Miss Hall might have been by this, she clearly understood that it was not just one person's dedication or government money that supported the fledgling museum. Local citizens stepped up to the plate with donations of money and time. The skills they offered covered all areas of museum maintenance, from the grounds to the highest level of financial planning. For example, the local Garden Club established the lovely rose garden that is now the centerpiece of the museum's campus while the civic-minded Board of Directors has been especially important in assuring the museums fiscal stability.

Surviving some fairly rocky years in the middle of the last century, the museum has grown from a paid staff of zero to an organization of 29 full and part time professionals, including managerial personnel, highly skilled archivists and curators, dedicated facilities management personnel, and a wide assortment of people necessary for maintaining the museum and improving its service to the community. The volunteer staff has grown even more. There are now 470 skilled, dedicated, unpaid workers who provide essential services to the museum in any given year. There is no doubt that the museum could not function as it does without these people.

The initial $1000 per year allocation provided by the State Legislature in 1928 is now three-quarters of a million dollars. This amounts to 60% of the museum's budget. The rest comes through the Sharlot Hall Historical Society, a private organization that operates through private contributions and earned income. Now, as when the museum was founded, there is no charge for admission.

School children still come to the Sharlot Hall Museum to learn about the history of Yavapai County, but there are also thousands of local adult visitors as well as guests from across the US and abroad. Not only casual investigators, but also serious researchers of all ages and at all stages of their work, use the facilities. Altogether, the Sharlot Hall Museum welcomes over 70,000 visitors a year and has become an integral part of the local cultural and business environment of Prescott. In her wildest dreams, Sharlot Hall, who died in 1943, could not have conceived of the successful enterprise her original dream has become.

Structures
Miss Hall needed a building to house her artifacts; since the beginning, the structures themselves are among the most important features of the museum. The structures with historical significance are listed below, in order of construction.

Fort Misery was so-named because Judge John Howard, who lived in the structure in the 1890s, complained that the food was not good. "Fort Misery," built in 1863-64, is the oldest log building associated with the government of the Territory of Arizona. It was originally located on Granite Creek and reassembled on the museum grounds in 1934. A complete restoration was accomplished in 1996-97.

The centerpiece of the museum is the Governor's Mansion. The log structure was constructed in 1864 on the site it now occupies. It was deeded to the Museum in 1927. The building served as the first Territorial Governor's residence and offices. Over the years it has been refurbished; the more recent renovations have been designed to recall its original design and flavor. The house contains major museum exhibits reflecting the earliest Territorial period.

The John C. Fremont House is a wooden structure that was constructed in 1875 on the southwest corner of Marina and Gurley, the eventual site of the Carnegie Library. In 1972 it was moved to the Sharlot Hall Museum grounds from Union Street, where it had been an Episcopalian parsonage. J. C. Fremont was governor of the Arizona Territory from 1878 to 1881, and the house is presently furnished to reflect that important period in Territorial history.

An important local merchant built the Victorian style home now known as the William Coles Bashford House in 1877, with add-ons made through around 1903. It was moved from 401 East Gurley to the museum grounds in 1974. The building now houses the museum store, minor exhibits, a visitor's lounge, and offices.

The Santa Fe Railway Storage Building was built some time before 1924 by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway and used as an oil storage building. After the railroad discontinued service to Prescott, the City used this sheet-metal-clad building as a warehouse. It was slated for demolition until the Sharlot Hall Museum staff petitioned the City to have it moved to the museum grounds in 1995. It is currently used for large artifact and miscellaneous storage.

The Sharlot Hall Building was constructed between 1935 and 1937, with the assistance of the CWA and WPA. The Hartzell room was added in the 1960s. The stone building is typical of others built with Depression era relief agency funds and labor. It was constructed at a time when the museum required more work room as well as space to house and secure its collections. In fact, it was to become the museum, with exhibit spaces as well as an apartment for Miss Hall.

The log Ranch House was constructed on the museum grounds in 1936 using WPA funds. It was designed to resemble an old-time ranch house and now houses exhibits that enhance that image.

The Vehicle Building, built in 1937 to serve as an automobile repair garage, did not originally belong to the museum. It was not made into exhibit space until late in the 20th century. As its name implies, it houses much of the museum's animal-drawn and motorized vehicle collection.
