While the history of the Mayer area is rich, the Mayer Library, which is fairly new, does not have older historically significant artifacts. It does, however, have several artifacts from recent decades, which are listed below.
History of Mayer
Joe Mayer came to this rich mining and ranching region in 1882. He had been a cook before he came to the area, so it was natural that he would establish an eating establishment and saloon. The town named after him became a station for the stages that carried passengers and freight toward Prescott, and Joe Mayer and his family catered to the needs of the drivers and passengers.
When a railroad was built connecting Prescott to the mining areas in the Bradshaw Mountains, Mayer became the end of the line. Eventually, in 1904, Mayer served as the junction for rail lines leading up to Poland and Crown King.
Various mining activities flourished in the Mayer area and fed into the town's economy on and off for years. In addition to gold and silver, many other minerals dotted the mountains, and even into the 1950s, zinc and lead were mined in large quantities.
Today, many of the residents of Mayer are conscious of maintaining the singularity of their town, just as they are intent on holding onto those historic objects that were central to the development of the area.
