Located in the Douglas family estate in Jerome, Arizona, the Jerome State Historic Park's mission is to interpret the history the Douglas family and interpret the history of Jerome in the mining era.
Each year the Park helps to enlighten approximately 90,000 visitors. The park is open year round except Christmas Day.
History of the Douglas Family
The patriarch of the US branch of the Douglas family was James S. Douglas (1837-1918). Always referred to as Dr. Douglas, he was born and raised in Canada. Dr. Douglas received a broad education, traveled a great deal and ended up developing a reputation throughout North America as a highly skilled and shrewd metallurgist. He not only was a keen judge of ore, but he also developed a series of smelting processes used to extract the maximum of copper from fairly weak ores.
Working for Phelps, Dodge, a well-established mercantile firm in the US, Dr. Douglas became involved in mining in Arizona. He was among the first representatives of big money to consider the feasibility of developing copper mines in the Black Hills around Jerome. Lack of transportation suppressed his interest in that area in the early 1880s, but he was instrumental in developing the mines around Bisbee and Douglas (named for the family) in extreme southern Arizona.
One cannot overestimate the importance of Dr. Douglas in the development and execution of mining in Arizona. Also a kingpin in Arizona Territory/State politics, his influence was profound, as was that of his sons-Walter, who became especially powerful in the Clifton-Morenci area, and James, who came to Jerome.
James Douglas Jr. was known as Rawhide Jimmy. Jimmy worked in a number of different Phelps Dodge mines, including the Senator mine, Big Bug and Bumble Bee and then went on to work in Mexico. Later, he was drawn back to central Arizona, partially because of the obvious success of William Andrews Clark's United Verde operations. When another rich vein of copper was discovered, Douglas moved his attention to Jerome. He managed to gain control of the United Verde Extension, developing it into an amazingly successful and lucrative venture. It closed down its operations when the ore finally played out in 1938.
The last Douglas who was important to Jerome was Lewis Douglas, the friend of presidents and foreign leaders, an ambassador and academic. The cottage on the hillside adjacent to the Douglas Mansion built as a wedding present for him.
After Jimmy Douglas' death in 1949, the Douglas family connection with Jerome was further weakened, and the family offered the estate for sale. No one was willing to meet their asking price ($10,000), but mining companies did use the mansion as office space in the 1950s. Eventually the family donated the buildings and property to the State of Arizona.
History of the Jerome State Historic Park
In 1962 the sons of Jimmy Douglas donated the Douglas Mansion to the State Parks of Arizona, and the Board agreed to establish a park. The Jerome State Historic Park, comprised of approximately three acres and housed on the former Douglas property, was the ninth park in the Arizona State Parks System. Opened in 1965, it has continued to develop its exhibits and expand its collection of historic artifacts and archival material. It shares a joint mission of service to citizens with all the parks in Arizona's system, but this park's unique mission is to interpret the history the Douglas family and interpret the history of Jerome in the mining era.

Structures:
Buildings:
Douglas House: the 8700 square foot Douglas home was designed by Phoenix architects Lescher and Kibbey, and built by contractor T. B. Stewart, for $150,000 in 1916. Using over 80,000 adobe blocks, it is said to be one of largest modern adobe dwellings in the country. All materials were purchased in Arizona, and the adobes were made on the grounds. According to the recollections of the contractor, T.B. Stewart, "We blew the top off the hill and leveled the site off. To make the adobes (111/2" by 171/2" by 31/2") we brought in a crew of adobe men. These fellows mixed dirt, straw, and water together by hand, dumped it into a 3 brick ladder-like frame, smoothed the surface and sun dried the bricks on the site." There was an Italian marble shower, concrete floors, and electric kitchen range, and steam heat throughout the building. The interior furnishings were simple.
The grand opening of the mansion featured a Christmas party for 1200 children in the town, which became an annual event. However, no one from the Douglas family resided permanently in the house. They merely retained a small servant staff in the mansion and used it primarily to entertain guests and conduct mining business. When the United Verde Extension shut down its operations in Jerome in 1938, James Douglas moved back to Canada, leaving the mansion in charge of caretakers. When he died in 1949, most of remaining furnishings were shipped back to Canada.
The house now accomodates significant exhibits for the park.
Carriage house: a separate structure but considered part of the mansion, it is also adobe. In addition to storing vehicles, it housed servants' quarters and some animals. The park uses this structure to display its own vehicle collection.
