Jerome Historical Society and Museum

The Jerome Historical Society operates out of several locations-one for administration, one for archives, and one that houses most of the artifacts the society owns. The mission of the Jerome Historical Society is to increase and diffuse the knowledge of Jerome as a historical and colorful mining city. As one would expect, many of their artifacts relate to the mining industry and to the lives of miners in and around Jerome.

The Jerome Historical Society welcomes researchers, who should contact archivist/ curator, Alene Alder, about assistance and advice about how to proceed with their work. Interested parties can reach her at 520-634-7349 or history@verdenet.com.

History of Jerome
Founded in the 1880s and incorporated in the early 20th century, Jerome's development depended on the exploitation of the extremely rich copper ore veins that surround it. Quaintly perched on the side of Cleopatra Hill, the town looks as though it is ready to slide to the bottom, which it very nearly did at one point, both physically and economically. Like all towns that rely solely on the extraction of mineral deposits for their economic well-being, Jerome's history illustrates the effects of a continuous boom/bust cycle fairly typical in any industrializing society.

The United Verde Copper Company, owned by Senator William A. Clark, was the major copper producer in the town until 1915, when the United Verde Extension expanded its operations under the direction of Jimmy "Rawhide" Douglas, the son of Dr. James Douglas, one of the most important mine developers in Arizona's history.

Smelting operations, eventually located down the hill, operated full bore for some time, releasing smoke and soot that damaged animal and plant life for miles around. The disruption was so great that in 1919 a group of Verde Valley farmers sued the copper producers for ruining their crops and orchards. Armed with crack defense teams, the companies were held liable for a grand total of $6. However, after this, they had to acquire smoke easements from area agriculturalists.

Both the United Verde and the United Verde Extension were vulnerable to periods of economic fluctuation. Likewise, the town's population varied as employment opportunities expanded or contracted. Although it was difficult to accurately enumerate the population (it may have gone as high as 15,000 and surely was at least 10,000 in the late 1910s), most historians agree that, in its heyday, Jerome was the largest town in Yavapai County. Town residents had been born all over North America and Europe. The mix of ethnicities definitely added to the flavor of the community.

Jerome rode high for decades. It had highly successful athletic teams, hosted traveling stage productions, and boasted of several movie theatres. Its school system was compared favorably with those in Phoenix, Bisbee, Douglas, Prescott, and Tucson, and its hospital was state of the art.

However, mining alone cannot sustain an economy indefinitely. The industry, by its very nature, depletes its assets. No longer the bonanza it was in the 1910s and 1920s, the United Verde Extension closed its operations completely in 1938, several years after Phelps Dodge acquired the United Verde (1935).

When Phelps Dodge shut down its operations in 1953, Jerome became a virtual ghost town, and much of its current reputation rests on that fact. However, tourism and a flourishing Verde Valley economy have initiated a sort of resurrection for the town. As the 21st century dawns, Jerome is thriving and growing. Visitors are drawn by the ghost town theme and the magnificent views, but mining is still central to the town's ambiance. Despite the fact that the local economy seems to be based on retail sales, visitors are still greeted by signs proclaiming this to be the "billion dollar copper camp." And it very nearly was.

History of the Jerome Historical Society
The Jerome Historical Society was formed after the Phelps Dodge Corporation closed the United Verde mine in 1953. On May 9 of that year, citizens got together and decided to make the most of the town's history. They hosted activities, including a homecoming party, which they termed "Spook Night."

One of the initial goals of the Jerome Historical Society was to gain possession of buildings and property in the decaying town. It is now one of the largest landholders in Jerome.

In 1954 the Historical Society established the Mine Museum in the former Fashion Saloon, a building they had purchased for $1. Later that year, they bought the Episcopalian Church, which now houses the Jerome History Center. Their list of holdings expanded dramatically in 1956 when they acquired several properties from Verde Exploration, Limited for $10. The Jerome Historical Society's properties are listed below under Buildings.

The Jerome Historical Society still operates the Mine Museum in the building in which it was established. They also house or display artifacts in Lawrence Hall, in the Jerome Historical Society archives, and in outside exhibits. In addition to preserving historically valuable archives and artifacts, the Historical Society sponsors a yearly symposium as well as many community activities, including a tour of the town, which they co-host with the Chamber of Commerce every spring.
