Clemenceau Heritage Museum

The Clemenceau Heritage Museum is located in the old Clemenceau School building. It operates under the auspices of the Verde Historical Society. Its two permanent exhibits are:

Exhibits in other areas are changed from time to time. Most of the exhibits are designed to relate the history of Clemenceau and the larger community of the Verde Valley.

The museum is run entirely by volunteers and is open four days a week or by appointment (520-634-2868).

History of Clemenceau
The United Verde Copper Company was the first large mining enterprise in the Verde Valley. This company was run by the Clark family, and it was virtually the only game in town for some time. However, James (Jimmy or "Rawhide") Douglas, son of Dr. James Douglas, arguably the most important person in the development of copper mining in Arizona, decided to buy into another important operation in the area. Through a series of somewhat complex maneuvers, he purchased the Little Daisy mine in Jerome and took control of the United Verde Extension (generally referred to simply as UVX). Under his leadership, this company became extremely successful.

William Andrews Clark, the owner of the United Verde Copper Company, was the first area mine owner to move his smelting operations down the hill from Jerome. He began construction on his smelter in Clarkdale in 1912, and Douglas followed suit. In 1916 his company, the UVX, began the process that would lead to their acquisition of land for a company town, which they named Verde. In 1918, crews constructed a smelter in Verde, which was renamed in 1920 in honor of Georges Clemenceau, the WWI era premier of France.

The first residents in the area were farmers and ranchers; miners and smelter workers followed them shortly. While Jerome's residents came from an exceptionally wide range of ethnic backgrounds, Clemenceau was primarily settled by Mexicans and American Caucasians. According to recollections of old-timers, there were few or no African Americans.

Clemenceau was a fairly typical working-class town. The desert allowed residents few amenities. Further, because of its remoteness from large centers of population, the local population might have felt somewhat isolated. Older residents recollect, however, that the area offered them a very rich life, replete with homemade entertainment. They had baths, an amusement hall for dances and movies, a clubhouse, and a pool hall. And they were surrounded by all of the amenities of the beautiful Verde Valley.

Clemenceau maintained its identity for several years, but eventually it was absorbed into Cottonwood. The smelter closed permanently in 1937, and Cottonwood definitely felt the economic effects of the Depression. The area suffered further as mining gradually ceased altogether in the 1950s.

However, Cottonwood and the entire Verde Valley experienced an explosion in population growth during the early 1970s. The area now has a large retirement population as well as housing that accommodates lower-income residents. Area schools and the hospital are the major employers in Cottonwood. There is little manufacturing, although various services and commercial establishments flourish in the area.

History of the Verde Historical Society and the Clemenceau Heritage Museum
(Much of this information is taken from the Verde Historical Society's "fact sheet".)

The Verde Historical Society was organized on November 10, 1987. The purpose of the Verde Historical Society is: "To preserve and display, for the public benefit, the artifacts and heritage-written, spoken, and living-of the Verde Valley." Originally, its major goal was to start a museum, and two years later they signed a lease with the Cottonwood/
Oak Creek School District for the use of the south end of the Clemenceau School Building (now on the National Register of Historic Places). It held its grand opening on November 10, 1991.

Structures used or owned by the Verde Historical Society
The Clemenceau School: The Museum is located in the Clemenceau School; however, the Verde Historical Society does not own that building. A gift of Jimmy Douglas, the school opened in 1924 and continued as a school until 1987. However, the high school had not been housed in the structure since area high schools were consolidated in 1958. Cottonwood students went to Mingus Union High School in Jerome in 1959.

The Bank of Clemenceau (owned by the Verde Historical Society): This wooden building was moved to its location next to the Clemenceau School during the summer of 2000. The one-story structure opened as a bank in 1921, and in 1934 the Post Office moved into the space vacated by the bank. The Post Office operated until July 31, 1954.
