History Comes Alive

The Museum offers a growing living history experience for guests, highlighted by themed programs on the second Saturday of each month on the Museum grounds (see Events listings). Military-themed living history programs are also offered at the Fort Whipple Museum on the third Saturday of February, May, August and November during 2012. 

In addition, a series of eight Living History Workshops offer participants the chance to learn how to make Victorian accessories while gaining a better understanding of life in 19th century Arizona.

The Museum's living history interpreters are portrayed by staff, local area volunteers and special program volunteers from around the state. Living history training is done on a wide variety of subjects to acquaint volunteers and staff with 19th century life. Work sessions are held to help create the period garments that will be worn while participating in the program. Accuracy is stressed as much here as in exhibits or other programming done by the Museum.

The current focus of the living history program is the period 1864 to 1867 when Prescott was the capital of the territory. This allows the use of the Governor's Mansion, One-room Schoolhouse, Ft. Misery, the Ranch House, and the Print Shop as sites for programming.

While the Museum is stressing the 1860s time period, other decades are open to interpretation for those interested in them. If you'd like to become a Living History interpreter, you may choose between a third-person presentation -- such as tour guides use -- and a first-person chautauqua experience where you become a living visitor from the past. Whatever your interest, Sharlot Hall Museum is a place that brings history to life.
