Brilliant Color: The Vibrant Art of Jack Dudley

Jack Dudley's work has previously appeared in the Museum Center Gallery. Please enjoy this on-line only exhibit.

Jack Dudley (1918-1996), in his later years, perfected the rare "broken color" technique of oil painting, building layers of colors on the canvas, then carefully revealing the submerged colors by "breaking through" one or more layers. The effect is somewhat impressionistic, somewhat pointillistic, and entirely unique.

Dudley lived and painted in Laguna Beach for 38 years. During World War II, he produced artistic records of the Indochina Theater. During the period after the war until the mid-1960s, Dudley worked as a commercial artist and architectural illustrator.

Upon establishing himself as a fine artist, Dudley's art has been shown in galleries in Laguna Beach (where the Esther Wells Collection continues to represent him), Portland, Oregon, Scottsdale, and Palm Desert, California.

In 1996, shortly before he passed away, Jack Dudley received the Grand Canyon Purchase Award for his painting, "View from the North Rim." One year later, the Dudley family established the Jack Dudley Memorial Fund.

The Jack Dudley paintings for sale in this exhibit are masterful examples of the broken color technique in oil painting. more...
