Leonard Wood

Colonel Leonard Wood commanded the Rough Riders. In 1886 he had won a Medal of Honor leading troops in pursuit of Geronimo and his band of Chiricahua Apaches. When war began in 1898 he was President McKinley's personal physician. On July 1 he moved up from the Rough Riders to command the entire second battalion.
