Theodore Roosevelt had
powerful friends and connections. Offered command of the regiment, he deferred in favor of
Colonel Leonard Wood and was made the regiment's lieutenant colonel. On July 1 Wood was
promoted and Roosevelt took command of the Rough Riders with the rank of colonel. He
served as New York governor (1899 - 1900) and as the twenty-sixth President of the United
States (1901 - 1909).
