Alex
Maldonado, well known for his Yaqui Flute, performs with his daughter, Melissa
(inset), who sings, dances and also plays the flute. Son Nick is the group’s
percussionist. Joining the group in 2007 was granddaughter Luisa Velanzuela (far left), performing Fancy Shawl Dance.
Alex Maldonado’s flutes are all handcrafted from various
types of wood with intricate beadwork. It can take him three days or three months
to make a flute, depending on the detail of work. Maldonado’s flutes have
won prestigious awards in various art shows, and one is on permanent display
in the Phoenix City Hall Native American Art Collection. Maldonado balances
his time between creating the flutes and performing his music.
The Sinquah family singers and dancers provide entertainment with their colorful costumes, hoop dancing, and interaction with the audience.
