Territorial Women's Memorial Rose Garden
MAUDE BROWN ALKIRE
Maude Emily Brown Alkire, daughter of Mary Elisabeth Mayfield and John O. Brown, was born on February 29, 1872, in Cairo, Illinois.

She came to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1896, and married George Almarin Alkire that same year on December 29. Maude and George adopted two children: Paul Leslie, born July 14, 1900, in Los Angeles, California; and Martha Alkire Bolte, born June 12, 1905, in Azusa, California.

Maude was a devoted homemaker and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Phoenix. The family resided at 618 North 6th Street near Phoenix Union High School.

The Alkire family was a prominent pioneer family in the Valley. George was a cattleman, Phoenix businessman, a member of the Arizona National Guard and a volunteer fireman. Maude was one of many women who foresook her family for love of her husband and helped build a new city in the desert.

Maude died on August 5, 1955, in Phoenix and was buried in Hermosa Beach, California.
