A check list of basic Yavapai County property research at the Sharlot Hall Museum Archives and Library

The most effective research is done with the most amount of information.  If you can, get an "abstract of title" of the property from the Yavapai County assessor's office or a title company before using our services.

* Historic District Surveys:
Territorial Architecture of Prescott, 1978 (bounded by Sheldon, Leroux, Park, and Mt. Vernon streets)
Courthouse Plaza Historic District, 1987 (property on Plaza only)
West Prescott Historic District Survey and National Register Nomination, 1989 (Park, Country Club and adjoining streets)
Pine Crest Historic District Survey and National Register Nomination, 1989 (Apache, Yavapai, Cochise and San Carlos streets)
East Prescott Historic District Survey, 1988 (bounded by Alarcon, Carleton, Mt Vernon streets and the old railway)
Fleury's Addition Historic District Survey and National Register Nomination, 1994 (bounded by Gurley, Western, Willow, and Grove )
Prescott Armory Historic District Survey and National Register Nomination, 1994 (bounded by Washington, Willis, and the Smoki and Armory buildings)
South Prescott Townsite Historic District Survey and National Register Nomination, 1998 (bounded by Goodwin, Aubrey, Montezuma, and Alarcon)
Mile High Park Historic District Survey and National Register Nomination, 1999 (Oregon Avenue from Gail Gardner to Lindberg and Shasta, and Linwood and Josephine)
City of Prescott, Arizona: Historic Preservation Master Plan, 1997 (overview of some historic districts and includes properties not in above resources such as Fort Necessity ["Indian Hill"], Sam Hill Warehouse, Hassayampa Historic District, Santa Fe Depot, and the Rev. Meany House)

Yavapai County Historic Property and District Research Guide:  A complete list of properties in the area that have been surveyed for historic significance.
Subject index: location or street address (for example, Gurley West 415) and names buildings and previous owners (from abstract and directory listings).
"Sanborn Maps" for towns in Yavapai County and Prescott (1895, 1901, 1910, 1924, 1931, 1948 are on microfilm, except 1931 which is map #940). These maps show buildings and uses and old address numbers.
City and Telephone Directories (1903-present, some missing): Street index begins in 1917 and continues through 1983 and includes 1990. Addressees and street names can change (check Sanborn Maps above).
Photo index (partially cataloged on-line at  Arizona Southwest Index): street address (for example, Gurley West 415) and names of previous owners, also try the street name alone (property may appear in the background of other subjects).
Photo Browsing files "Buildings - (Residences, Ranches, Businesses, etc)": These files include unidentified properties.
Aerial and panoramic views: Aerials are listed in "Photograph Collections" binder. Panoramics are listed under specific towns (e.g."Prescott").
Maps: in Subject index under "Maps" or use our graphical maps database.  You may also search the Yavapai Library Network (pre1900 maps with property information for Prescott see #829 (c.1883), #819 (c.1887) or #58 (1891).
Yavapai Heritage Foundation index card collection: Document Box 386-390. Request information by street name or location.
